4. Avoid processed foods. The nutritional value of food is severely compromised during food processing and some of the chemical processes used to preserve food are very harmful to your health.

5. Add more whole foods to your diet. These foods have all of their natural compounds intact are are much better for you. You can add whole foods to your diet easily by introducing slices of fresh fruit and vegetables to your meals.

7. Roast, bake or broil food instead of deep frying to prevent excess oil absorption.

8. Water is vital to sustain a healthy life. It is recommended that you drink at least 8 glasses of water every day. It helps the cells, tissues and organs to function properly. Dehydration can cause serious damage to the kidneys. Prolonged dehydration can result in mental confusion, coma and even death if not treated immediately.

9. Maintain a low fat diet. Foods that are naturally low in fats are fruits, vegetables, beans and grains. Make sure to check the product labels. It is best to choose fat content of 1 gram of fat per 100 calories.

10. Eat foods such as red meats, fish, poultry, cereals, leafy vegetables and raisins to ensure you have sufficient iron intake. Iron helps to energise the body by stimulating red blood cell production. However, in order to absorb iron you also need to eat foods that contain Vitamin C.

21. Dilute fruit juice with water. This reduces the amount of natural sugar that you consume and also helps you to reach your goal of drinking 8 glasses of water per day.

22. Junk foods are very high in sodium, have lots of calories and contain many damaging chemicals that are designed to make you crave more. The high salt levels in junk food also cause you to drink more soda, adding additional sugar, or dangerous sugar substitutes such as aspartame, to your diet. 23. Reduce the amount of sugar you take in hot drinks gradually until you don't need it anymore. White sugar does not contain any vitamins or minerals, and brown sugar contains a very small amount of no nutritional importance. Sugar is also fattening and can cause tooth decay.

24. If you have a sweet tooth, then try replacing sugar with a natural sweetener such as stevia. Unlike artificial sweeteners stevia has many healthy side benefits.

25. Be aware of portion sizes when preparing a meal. Many foods, such as noodles, increase in size during the cooking process. Some packs are intended for 2 people but look like they're only meant for one. If you don't check the portion size you can easily double your calorie intake without realising.

26. Oily fish is an excellent source of omega 3-fatty acids. These unsaturated oils help to combat cholesterol and maintain a healthy heart function.

27. If you don't like oily fish then an alternative source of Omega 3-fatty acid is Flaxseed. You can buy this from most health food stores.

28. Eat more organic food. These will help to remove toxins from your body.

29. Grow your own food! The best way to be sure you know what you're eating is to grow your own food. You can grow a surprising amount of food in the smallest of spaces. If you live in an apartment and do not have access to a garden then research vertical gardening techniques.

30. Eating herbs is an excellent way to detoxify your body. Licorice and yucca roots are great laxatives, dandelion and milk thistle detoxify the liver and witch hazel and cranberry are excellent anti oxidants.

32. Take your time when you eat. Eat very slowly and focus on the taste of the food in your mouth before you swallow. Pause between each mouthful and ask yourself if you are full. Pay close attention to the signals your body is giving you and you'll learn to stop eating when your body has had enough. You'll not only lose weight, but you'll also avoid that horrible bloated feeling and enjoy mealtimes much more.

33. Eat a meal while wearing a blindfold. This forces you to listen to your body and enhances your senses.
