Essential Tips For Practising Yoga At Home

Introduction

Practising yoga regularly will help you to stay calm, be more productive, reduce stress and improve your overall health and well being.

While the expertise, guidance and support of a qualified instructor is very important as you learn yoga techniques and stances, once you know what you're doing, daily practise at home will help you to get the most out of yoga. Regular practise, even if only for 20 minutes each day, will benefit you far more than attending a yoga class just once a week.

Practising yoga at home isn't always easy. So we've compiled a series of tips to help you get the most out of your DIY yoga sessions.

Let's get started...

Create a sacred space for yoga and stick to it

When you practise yoga the energy that you are working with also affects your environment. As does any other activity, and not always in a good way!

You should practise yoga in the same place each day to help build up the energy of the room, and be sure that there are no other regular activities in the same space that may disrupt the peaceful relaxing energy that you build.

A bedroom is usually a great place to practise yoga.

Wherever you choose to do your sessions ensure that your space is clean and tidy with good ventilation.

Watch when you eat

You should allow a minimum of 2 to 3 hours after meals before practising yoga as you'll gain the greatest benefit from yoga if you practise on an empty stomach. Most families schedules are dictated by meal times so try to create time for yourself that fits with your families needs.

Be sure to tell your family that you are not to be disturbed during your yoga session.

Practise Often

To gain the greatest benefit from yoga the key is frequency, not quantity. If you can only manage 20 minutes each day this will be much better for your that a few hours at the weekend.

Make a promise to yourself and keep it. Tell yourself that your yoga sessions are important and find time for them. If you feel that it is important you'll find a way to fit your sessions into your schedule.

Get up with Yoga!

It's generally considered that practising yoga in the morning reaps the greatest benefits. It also gets you off to a really good start, which goes on to affect the rest of your day in a really positive way.

Setting your alarm just 30 minutes early and getting up to do a 20 minute session of yoga before the rest of the family rises is a great routine to get yourself into.

If morning yoga isn't an option for you then later in the day, or in the evening as you relax before bed are also good options. But try to stick to a routine. The more habitual you can make your yoga practise the more likely you are to continue with your sessions.

Be comfortable, or pop on your jim-jams!

You should wear loose comfortable clothes during yoga that allows enough flexibility for you to move freely without any pulling or restriction. Sports clothes can be costly, but as you are practising in the privacy of your own home, you may find that loose fitting night clothes that are designed for sleeping will provide you with the same comfort and flexibility that you'd get from more expensive sports attire.

Mix up your sessions

Be sure to include a variety of yoga poses and breathing techniques in your daily practise. Mix it up and try to include a combination of stretching and strength building postures. If your session time is limited then alternate your days so that you get the full benefits of yoga.

Remember to end each session in relaxation with Yoga Nidra. Give yourself enough time at the end of your session to relax into meditation and really feel the benefits of your session in your body and mind.
